The International House group was founded in 1953 and there are now over 130 schools worldwide, over 20 of which are teacher training centers. The University of Cambridge / Royal Society of Arts Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults provides initial training for those at the beginning of their career. This professional qualification is probably the most widely recognized within the EFL profession.

The CELTA is conducted in small groups restricted to a maximum of 12, although the average is normally less. This ensures individual attention and the opportunity to get to know your colleagues even on the shortest course. All tutors are experienced professionals, typically with extensive teaching and training experience here and abroad. International House embraces a range of training methods and approaches. Your tutors will present you with a coherent set of practical approaches and encourage you to keep an open mind while incorporating your own experience and knowledge.

The course can include: development of language skills, presentation of new language items, teaching pronunciation, correction techniques, time-tabling, integration of textbooks in courses, techniques of practice, use of visual aids and drama, role of video and taped materials, syllabus design, professional development, analysis of English. Input sessions are followed by daily teaching practice, during which groups of trainees work with multinational classes of real language learners and gain experience at teaching two different levels. The observation of practicing teachers is an intrinsic part of the course and is integrated into the timetable. The course will comprise a minimum of 120 hours and the normal timetable is Monday through Friday 9am – 6pm. Trainees can expect to work hard as full participation and considerable application will be expected.
